Community members in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, brought all the joy at the launch of CHIME, South Africa on May 6th.
Developed through collaboration between Institute for Life Course Health Research (Stellenbosch University), Perinatal Mental Health Project (University of Cape Town), University of Roehampton and the Khayelitsha community, CHIME in South Africa brings together mothers, community members, musicians, health workers, researchers and civil-society partners to explore how shared, culturally embedded participatory music-making can support maternal wellbeing.
Our launch featured live performances, community dialogue and reflections from our partners all of whom are helping shape a model grounded in local realities and lived experience. As one of our attendees said:
”I am here, after my depression, because of music. I used to sing this song and it gave me strength. We have this music, it is there for us, we must just take it. And we must use it”
